So that's the joke, if you ask me and it's pretty hilarious. Diablo Immortal Gold doesn't answer the question posed by a Twitter user sans phone (I suppose if you can't download the app you can not get a free burger, and I guess that's a shame because anyone who can't afford a phone and a free app could probably use one) but it's brought joy to this writer. Much like a teaser of Diablo IV (or IIII if Blizzard takes any more cues from Activision) could have brought joy to my heart. Oh well. I will take the schadenfreude.
This past year blizzard announced a new mobile game during BlizzCon. Diablo Immortal was the large reveal during the publication's keystone occasion and players were not happy. The reveal was not satisfied with applause or enthusiasm. Instead, a sigh filled the room, followed closely by stunned disbelief and then roiling anger.
After all, Blizzard is either joking or completely out of touch to declare this game in this fashion in front of this crowd.
It is not that a mobile Diablo game isn't a good idea in and of itself. It's the combination of several elements conspiring to mad Blizzard's most ardent fan base. Let's look at the biggest missteps, overreactions and other assorted problems with this entire fiasco.Honestly, what the hell has been Blizzard thinking announcing a cell game as the fast Diablo Immortal Gold buy capstone reveal of this BlizzCon keynote event in front of its most passionate fans--most of whom are PC and console players first and foremost?
The company has said, in post-announcement interviews, they had been taken off guard by the reaction. But that's only possible if you are this out-of-touch with your fanbase to start with. It doesn't take much forethought to anticipate how badly fans are going to respond.
